Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Revelation 1:5, ” And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and washed us from our sins in His own blood. “
Background
Whenever you have a task to do or a job to perform, I’m sure that you usually give it your all. Sure, there are times when circumstances prevent you from doing your best, or the motivation isn’t quite there to spur you on to new heights, but for the most part, we generally put all of our effort into what we are doing. But try as we may, that intention and desire and determination of will still isn’t enough to guarantee that we’ll succeed, is it? Often times we fail, and sometimes miserably. Whether within our control or beyond our means, we fall victim to influences that prevent us from being completely successful. It’s our nature, and it’s shared by every human being. Except Jesus. Only Jesus Christ was completely successful. Only He was a faithful witness. And look at why He was able to do what He did. He was the firstborn from the dead. If you think that you should be doing a little better than you are, or you’re tired of failing, remember that Jesus conquered death and is the heir of eternity. When we are able to defeat death, then maybe we’ll be the faithful witness we long to be. But until then, we’ll have to accept that we are subject to disappointment and defeat.
Application
He also is the ruler over all the kings of the earth. If we would somehow attain supreme authority over all the powers of the world, then I guess we could expect to remain faithful in our witness. But until then, we’ll have to rest in what He has done for us. For as the faithful witness, He loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood. Those sins that repeatedly frustrate us, the failures and disappointments that keep us from being faithful, they all have been taken care of in the blood of Christ. Picture His hands washing you clean in His own blood, making you perfect and spotless to go stand before His Father. That is something we could never do on our own, and that is why we need a faithful witness. So, when you mess up, let it drive you back to Jesus, who loves you faithfully, completely, and be washed clean by the ruler of Heaven and earth.
Charge
As we seek Him today, thank Him for His faithfulness. And ask Him to make you more faithful, even as you rely on Him more.
