Be A Good Soldier

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from 2 Timothy 2:3, ” You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. “

Background

I’m not much of a military man. I don’t really know anything about it. My dad did a brief stint in the Air Force back in his day, but that was mainly to keep him out of civilian trouble. Beyond that, I have a rudimentary understanding of it and a few friends who have served or have spouses who serve. But even to my untrained eye, there are a couple of things that are apparent in our men of service. One thing I’ve noticed is a minimal amount of talk about what they do, and are doing. Those in service don’t spend a lot of time discussing with the general listener the plans and activities of their assignment. There is no seeking of attention, no bravado about their rank or status. They simply go and do. They are all about action and results. And I think this stems from the other observation I see, and that is that they cherish the honor of being able to serve their country and defend their beliefs. A dishonorable discharge strikes as much fear in them as, say, an enemy rifle staring down at them. Their courage and commitment comes from the purpose they serve. Now, there are undoubtedly some soldiers who muddle through, working the system while just going along for the ride. Every organization has them. But I dare say that that man doesn’t feel the same as the rest of his mates come each Memorial Day.

Application

There certainly is a difference between a soldier and a good soldier. And we, as followers of Christ, are called to be good soldiers of His. We are equipped to be good soldiers. We are warned about the enemy and his subtle, destructive ways. We are empowered with the Almighty Holy Spirit. We are given a clear directive to go and make disciples. We have open communication with our supreme commander. And we are commanded to prioritize our civilian life so that it doesn’t hinder our life as a good soldier. No, it’s not easy, but little about being a soldier is. So endure the battles, and be the soldier who is good.

Charge

As we seek Him today, look around you for times to fulfill your calling of service. Let the honor and majesty of the One you serve be your driving motivation.
