Be Meek – Like Jesus

Scripture

Our focus verse for today comes from Matthew 11:29-30, “Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Background

Having taught us how we need to come before Him with a poor spirit and sorrow over our sin, Jesus now tells us, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Meek is an uncommon term, isn’t it? How much do we know about being meek? When was the last time you used the word meek? Can you think of a person that you would describe as meek? What qualities come to mind? Are they characteristics you would desire to possess, or do they carry with them an image that you’d prefer not to have? Jesus here is talking about the gentle spirit, the mild person. He says that this person, just like the humble and the mournful one, is blessed. But why? How? What does the meek have to do with an inheritance, and especially inheriting the earth? Well, we don’t know much these days about things being taken from us. We haven’t wandered as a people or been persecuted as a nation. But they had. And Jesus is telling them that the very thing that was so often taken from them, their land, their region, their homes, will be handed back to them in their meekness. Not in their might or by their will, but through the hands of God. The power of this world will succumb to the gentle nature of the King. Jesus is opening up His world to us. He’s telling us how He designed things. The meek might lose what they have, but Jesus says that they will have what they need, and even more, they’ll inherit it all. The meek must trust in the power of another. We must trust in the power of another.

Application

So, what are you trying to make sure it happens just like you want it to? What has been taken from you that you must get back? How have you suffered emotionally that is leading you to stand up for yourself? Whose name are you interested in being known, yours or Jesus’? Let Jesus grant to you what we cannot claim on our own. Let His will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Be meek, and be Jesus.

Charge

As we seek Him today, take on the burden of Jesus by resting in His power. Stop trying to be all you can be, and ask Jesus to be all He can be in you. Don’t worry about what society says is so important. Live like we believe Jesus is that important.
