Our verse for today comes from Mark 13:5, ” And Jesus began to say to them, ‘See that no one leads you astray.’ “

In an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation , the character Data is sent to a pre- Industrial planet to recover the remains of a deep-space probe. However, Data is injured and has no memory of who he is or why he is there. He is taken to the village teacher and healer, Talur, who determines that he is an Iceman, not realizing that he is an android from a much more advanced civilization. As Data sits in on her classes with her students, he listens to her teaching them of the four basic elements: rock, fire, sky, and water, and how each of them is found in all of matter. A stick, for example, contains rock because it is hard. It contains fire because it ignites when placed in a flame. It contains the sky as evidenced by the smoke that rises from it when the fire is extinguished. And though the water is difficult to show forth, it is nevertheless somewhere within the stick, simply because it must be. Unable to recall the science that he knows and would use to refute her, Data is yet unconvinced that Talur’s lessons are correct. He claims that she is teaching so-called truths by way of association rather than by using empirical evidence. For her, things are true for one because they share similar traits with another.

In our society, which despite our advances and technology, appears at times to be closer to the science of Talur than the world of androids, there is an endless amount of information being distributed as truth. But for those who believe the Bible and follow Jesus, much of what we know as truth is discounted, dismissed, and mocked. Slavery flourished less than 200 years ago, so how much more outdated and wrong are the thoughts and beliefs that spring from a people who lived thousands of years ago? How can there be only one way to heaven and God, if they even exist, when man is now so advanced and capable, yet so unique and individual? Talur still speaks, when you turn on your tv or click on your smart phone. The misinformation is everywhere. So keep up to date with the Word that never changes.

As we seek Him today, check your antennas to make sure that what you’re receiving is coming from a reliable source.
