Daily Headlines on contemporary issues that impact a Biblical Christian worldview.

“Chinese Communists ‘Hope to Erase’ Christianity: Report”…

“Last August 25, several faithful gathered around one of the largest churches in China’s Shanxi province to watch it dissolve into dust. Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authorities had planted explosives inside Beihan Catholic Church, bringing its 131-foot-tall bell tower crashing to the ground. In a bout of déjà vu, the 10-year-old church had been built on the site of another church, which the CCP demolished in 1990.

Many Chinese religious systems believe in reincarnation — but in Communist-controlled China, a cycle of destruction repeats itself for Christians, according to a comprehensive, 63-page report from ChinaAid.”

“California school district accused of secretly counseling child to transition gender faces parents’ wrath”…

“Seats were full at this week’s Board of Education meeting of the Chico Unified School District in northern California, where a major point of debate was what critics have named the district’s so-called “Parental Secret Policy.”

Under the policy, which is based on guidance from the California Department of Education, the district’s 23 schools only inform parents of their child pursuing or considering a gender transition with the student’s prior written consent, except for extraordinary situations. Proponents argue the policy is meant to protect students’ privacy.”

“Facing Discrimination Lawsuit, Pfizer Abandons Minorities-Only Fellowship”…

“Nearly six months after top civil rights lawyers said the program violated federal law, Pfizer has opened a minorities-only fellowship to applicants of all races in the wake of a discrimination lawsuit.

The changes come amid a legal battle between Pfizer and Do No Harm, a medical advocacy group that in September sued the company over the fellowship. Though a federal judge tossed out the lawsuit in December, saying the plaintiffs lacked standing, Do No Harm filed an appeal on January 4. The group’s chairman, Stanley Goldfarb, is now taking credit for the changes, arguing that they reflect the power of lawfare to challenge reverse discrimination.”

“Saddleback Church ousted from SBC”…

“The Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee said Tuesday that its second-largest congregation, Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., and four other churches are “not in friendly cooperation” with the SBC. The convention’s credentials committee made the recommendation based on the churches having female pastors, which is contradictory to the SBC’s 1984 Resolution On Ordination And The Role Of Women In Ministry. In addition to Saddleback, the other congregations named in the recommendation include New Faith Mission Ministry in Griffin, Ga.; St. Timothy’s Christian Church in Baltimore, Md.; Calvary Baptist Church in Jackson, Miss.; and Fern Creek Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky. The congregations will have the opportunity to appeal the decision at the SBC Annual Meeting in June.”

“The LGBTQ+ population has doubled in the last decade”…

“The percentage of U.S. adults that identifies in some way as part of the LGBTQ+ population has doubled in the last ten years, according to a new poll from Gallup.

The poll found that 7.2 percent of adults in the U.S. identify as something other than heterosexual and cisgender in 2022. In 2012, the percentage was 3.5.

Much of the gain comes from younger adults. 19.7 percent of adults in Generation Z identified as LGBTQ+ in the poll, while 11.2 percent of millennials, 3.3 percent of Generation X, 2.7 percent of Baby Boomers, and 1.7 percent of Silent Generation respondents said the same.

Most of the non-straight respondents said that they were bisexual; 4.2 percent of respondents said they were bi. 1.4 percent identified as gay men and 1 percent as lesbians. 0.6 percent of U.S. adults identified as transgender, and 0.1 percent identified as pansexual, asexual, queer, and “other LGBT.””

“Asbury Revival sparks movements at other Christian colleges: ‘Holy Spirit is at work'”…

“The Asbury Revival in Kentucky has inspired similar movements at other Christian college campuses after the around-the-clock prayer service went viral on social media.

Similar revivals have emerged at schools like Cedarville University in Ohio; Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama; Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee; and Belmont University in Nashville, according to The Washington Post.

The movements come after thousands from around the world converged on Asbury in Wilmore to participate in services that have continued in the school’s chapel almost non-stop since students first refused to leave a worship service on Feb. 8. TikTok videos under the hashtag #AsburyRevival have racked up nearly 70 million views as of Sunday.”

“GOP gubernatorial candidate says Satan is sitting in libraries”…

“Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry (R) described efforts to ban what he has characterized as “sexually explicit” books from public libraries as “an absolute battle between good and evil.”

The Republican who is running for governor and has spearheaded efforts to ban books in the state spoke last Friday at a gathering of pastors hosted by Tony Perkins, president of the anti-LGBTQ+ Family Research Council, in Baton Rouge.

Earlier this month, Landry released a report that included a list of books that his office characterized as “sexually explicit” or inappropriate for children. The list included The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, Maia Kobabe’s Gender Queer, Alison Bechdel’s Fun HomeThe Lawn Boy by Jonathan Evison, and other books by LGBTQ+ authors and writers of color.”
