God Will Draw Us to Christ

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from John 6:45, ” It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me. “

Background

Watching the movie Rudy has always created a bit of inner tension for me. On the one hand, I love its rendering of the little guy working to all ends to fulfill his dream. Rudy is relentless in his quest to get into Notre Dame and be a part of their football team. Likewise, the era of college football in which the movie is set harkens back to my childhood days and the memories I have of time spent in front of the television or listening to the radio, myself dreaming of one day playing on those hallowed fields. On the other hand, I struggle with my biases against Notre Dame, both as a hated football rival and as a most recognizable representation of Roman Catholicism, with which I have my issues. To this point, in the movie, Rudy is about to find out ultimately and with finality if he has been accepted into Notre Dame as a transfer student, having applied and failed three times previously, and now having reached the end of his eligible transfer status. Understandably, Rudy is consumed with the weight of the impending news, and Father Cavanaugh, who has been instrumental in Rudy’s significant progress to this point, sits with him momentarily as Rudy prays in the church. As Rudy seeks direction as to what else he might do, Father Cavanaugh replies, ” Son, in 35 years of religious study, I have only come up with two hard, incontrovertible facts: there is a God, and I’m not Him. “

Application

Fortunately, you and I have a bit more to stand on when we survey the depth and breadth of our faith. And part of the bedrock of being a Christian is the truth Jesus shares with His listeners here in John, namely that if and when God truly calls you to Himself, He will certainly and without fail lead you to His Son Jesus. Nothing is more certain than if a person is seeking the true God, then He has come to Jesus to know Him. There is no other option. God’s path has no other direction. If God Almighty is directing, then you are going to be following after Jesus. That is totally incontrovertible, perhaps hard, but an absolute fact.

Charge

As we seek Him today, examine the facts that God has shared and let them increase your faith.
