God’s 2 x 4 Approach

Ask God to open your eyes to things that have you under their control.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from 1 Corinthians 9:27, ” No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. “

Background

I got hit by a two-by-four this weekend. A group of us were talking about addictions and substance abuse, and the comment was made that we all have our addictions, it’s just that most of us aren’t addicted to something that’s illegal or destructive to our bodies. And that comment hit me right between the eyes, for several reasons. One is that I know it to be true in my life. There are bad habits that I have, both relationally and personally, that I need to surrender to Christ. Nothing about me is as my Lord would ultimately have it to be. Another reason for my own personal smack down was that I had hit myself between the eyes with this same realization just a few months ago. It had become painfully clear that I needed to purge some things from my life, and so I went about making some changes. But here I was, not too long after, hearing these words of instruction, and realizing that I needed them now just as much as I needed them several months ago.

Application

And that is the two-by-four for all of us. The fact that even as we grow in Christ, there will still be times when we need to hear a word that we have heard several times already. There will be victories from times past that have eked away through the days that need to be surrendered to Jesus and won again. And there will be areas that have always been there, but now for the first time, they are seen by you as something that the Lord is ready to deal with. You may be a slave to how you critique and judge your spouse or kids. Maybe you love the power of keeping someone under your thumb or completely submissive to your whims. You may be caught in a wasteful cycle of spending money where it need not go, even a little here or there, because you haven’t considered the blessings it could bring to someone else. Or maybe it’s the familiar struggles of diet, the internet, or how good or bad you look in the mirror. Whatever it is, it should be our slave, and not the other way around. Strike a blow against what has a hold over you. Live in the freedom to which you have been set free in Christ, and avoid the two-by-fours.

Charge

As we seek Him today, ask God to open your eyes to things that have you under their control. And ask Him to do in you what you cannot do on your own, regardless of how hard you try.
