God’s Beauty is All Around Us

Ask God to show you something beautiful. And then let His Spirit within you open your eyes and your heart to see it.

Our verse for today comes from Mark 14:6, ” But Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.’ “

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you are somehow not familiar with this saying, and I fancy that you are, then you have for certain experienced it or seen it expressed around you. Just take a look at what you’re wearing today, and compare it with what someone half your age or not exactly your size is sporting. Beautiful might not be the word that comes to mind. Similarly, what else could explain the polar reactions that music generates from its promoters or detractors, or the vastly different ways that two seemingly normal people might decorate their homes or wear their hair. My buddy and I enjoy exchanging images of non- traditional subjects that strike us as beautiful – the simple, classic look of Penn State’s football uniform or the precise strike of a soccer ball that barely eludes the goalie’s fingers in the upper corner of the net. He also seeks out and enjoys the loveliness of the outdoors, and has made this passion more attainable by living in a town in the mountains. I, too, enjoy the outdoors, but I am not moved by its grandeur as he is. My appreciation ends where his wonder and awe begin.

Beauty might be subjective, but there is One judge that all things, beautiful or otherwise, are subject to. And it is this One alone, our Lord Jesus, whose opinion of what is beautiful should matter to us. When a thought crosses your mind, do you consider whether it’s beautiful in the eyes of Christ? When things get a little heated and your temperature begins to rise, do you think about Christ’s opinion of the response you’re about to make? When someone stands out as being out of place or disenfranchised, are they an eyesore to you, or could they be the beauty that God is intending for you to see, and love? I’m fairly certain God doesn’t care about the label on your shirt or the brand of your purse, but He does know beauty when He sees it. The question for us is, are we beholding what He is?

As we seek Him today, ask God to show you something beautiful. And then let His Spirit within you open your eyes and your heart to see it.
