In the Presence of My Enemies

Even to the End His Peace Reigns!

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 – But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words. (1 Thessalonians 4:13–18)

The small collection of vans and campers pulled into one of Lassen National Forest’s small campground’s parking areas and discharged a line of women and children desperate for the toilet.

“I don’t like this, Jimmy.” Teller whispered when the families were out of range. “We’re trapped in here. Only one way in and one way out.”

Jimmy stepped down from the driver’s seat in the old Keystone camper, once pristine and cherished by some family in West Texas. Now, the milage and abuse were taking their toll on almost everything: tires, sanitary system, and they knew they needed to keep the various medications refrigerated. But Jimmy also knew the FBI and the U.N.’s fanatical One Worlders were close to catching up with their little group of fifty eclectic Jesus followers.

Jimmy watched as the mothers led the little ones in some basic exercises.

Jimmy sighed deeply and thought, “Billy, why’d you have to go and get yourself killed? I’m not a pastor.”

“We won’t be here long, Teller. I told you I grew up here. The stream over there is clean water. We need to refill our containers.” Jimmy began his evaluation of the camper, and Teller followed. They were quiet for a moment.

Jimmy stopped on the driver’s side front tire when a yell rang out. And, before he could move, there was a Glock 22 in his face.

They had fallen into a trap.

“Hello, Jimmy,” Colonel Albert crooned. He tried to sound professional, but this was going to push him into the short list of general staff candidates. Jimmy Trips was one of the last of the fanatic Christians still on the run. They had refused the chip, which is the world’s coolest tech. The Colonel’s daughter took an afternoon job to be able to afford the heads-up display glasses. No, these people were losers and a threat to the establishment of the one-world government.

Jimmy and Teller were zip-tied and led over to a U.S. Forest Service dark green stake-side truck, where they were loaded with the rest of the adults. The children were separated and loaded into another truck, which caused a mini rebellion by the older kids.

Jimmy began to pray. “Jesus, we made it this far. We didn’t give up on You. I guess I should have realized, Lord, that this was inevitable. You know what comes next. These goons will find a spot where they can shoot us and bury us. Take the children, Lord. Don’t let them see what is about to happen.”

The trucks pulled out onto the deserted road and headed further north into the park. The memories were playing in his mind, and Jimmy thought, “I wouldn’t trade this life for any other, Lord. You have been so good to me. And, what a place to die and be buried. Lassen. Your artistry is evident all around.”

Jimmy looked around the bed of the truck and realized that the Holy Spirit had descended in power. Everyone was smiling and beginning to sing one of their favorite songs: Do you hear the mountains trembling? Quickly, Jimmy realized that His King wasn’t finished with His little tribe.

But what?

The back window of the truck opened, and one of the one-worlders stuck his gun through and yelled. “Shut Up!!!”

But the truck hit a pothole, and his gun dropped to the bed. Then it hit an even larger pothole, and Jimmy looked out the back of the truck. The road was crumbling.

Earthquake!

The adults knew instantly they wouldn’t walk away from this. And the one-worlders knew it also, and just in time, the driver stopped the truck from falling into a chasm. The mountain was coming down, literally. The driver and his compatriot jumped out of the cab and ran around to the back. They were each holding the U.N.’s newest sub-machine guns. They were going to finish the job right there on the road.

The loudest sound ever stopped everything! It sounded like a trumpet straight from Heaven. Mt. Lassen exploded as if there were a nuclear bomb inside. A terrifying ash cloud blew out in every direction, and burning rocks the size of houses came flying out of the ash cloud. And, the road continued to fall out from their feet. Jimmy saw that the children were still in their truck and looking over at him. They were all smiling.

Suddenly, the ground opened up and swallowed the two trucks and the line of vehicles with the special police force behind them. Many of the soldiers were out of their vehicles, trying to find a way out of the situation. The vehicles began falling into the darkness one by one, taking the police with them.

Then the truck fell out from under Jimmy, and he looked at his friends in the truck with him. They were all smiling. Jimmy realized that the truck hadn’t gone anywhere. He was gaining speed into the sky along with his friends and the children. He realized he had just heard the loudest trumpet call of all time.

Jimmy thought about looking back at the destruction, but a sense of joy flooded his heart and mind; the past had lost its relevance. Jimmy looked around at his friends and realized the children were dancing in the air to a song that flooded the air.
