Is Jesus more to You than a Get-Out-Of-Hell Ticket

Let your reason for coming to Jesus be your reason for living for Him. Follow Him, instead of expecting Him to follow you around.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Mark 10:17, ” Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?’ “

Background

In this country, more than 45 million people belong to a fitness gym. That is a significant portion of the American population who are actively addressing their health condition. However, 67% of gym memberships go unused. Therefore, two-thirds of the people who are willing to pay for exercise choose rather to spend the money and forego the effort. What’s the point of the membership? There are at least eleven cars that one could buy that are capable of speeds in excess of 215 mph. But except for the German Autobahn, where there are no speed limits, where else would you be able to experience but a fraction of the power at your fingertips? What would be the point of owning such horsepower? Quite literally, almost every American adult has a cell phone. Likewise, stress and anxiety are common to all of us as well. But ironically, making the short list of causes of stress, along with such heavyweights as job pressure, money, health and relationships, is media overload. If we use our phones to free us up and stay informed, what’s the point if it’s a major contributor to a lesser quality of life? Similarly, there is a 75% increase in the likelihood of melanoma from frequent uses of a tanning bed, so what’s the point of having golden brown skin that’s giving you cancer? Also, 93% of us believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet only 44% of us eat breakfast daily. Again, why believe something if it’s not what you’re living by?

Application

If you are a Christian, then there was a time when you came running to Jesus and knelt before Him. It made sense to you, perhaps even overwhelmed and consumed you. You knew your guilt and believed in His grace of atonement and forgiveness. But today, what is the point of that decision? Has it devolved into a once-a-week routine? Is it little more than a get-out- of-hell ticket? How long has it been since He went through an entire day with you, speaking into your choices moment by moment? Right now, what is the point of you being a Christian?

Charge

As we seek Him today, let your reason for coming to Jesus be your reason for living for Him. Follow Him, instead of expecting Him to follow you around.
