Is there Someone Above You

Our verse for today comes from John 3:31, ” He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. “

Fifty light years from Earth, a planet once existed that was similar to ours. It originally had two moons and was slightly larger than Earth, but in most other ways it was a match. However, it was many years older, and its age was the ultimate reason for its demise. The aging core of the ancient world became increasingly unstable, and eventually the planet exploded. But before Krypton exploded, Jor-El was able to secure his son Kal-El in a spaceship that rocketed from their collapsing home and eventually landed on Earth. And as we all know, Kal-El became Clark Kent, who then became Superman. Well, the fiction of superheroes notwithstanding, there is something that rings true about this mild-mannered reporter who ended up in Metropolis. He came from high above, and he certainly was above all that he chose to serve and protect. No one on Earth could match his strength, his vision, or his speed. His powers were extraordinary, and his motives were pure.

The person of Jesus can conjure up images as varied as a beaten criminal hanging on a cross to a glorified Messiah on a mountaintop with Moses and Elijah and a bright cloud emitting the voice of God. We will shudder at the horrors He experienced on behalf of our sins, and weep with joy as we celebrate His triumphant resurrection. We marvel at His mastery over sickness, disease, and even death, and we gladly embrace His domain over nature. But He is above all. He really is. I know we say that, and we willingly affirm it. But all really does mean all. There is no kryptonite in our bag that renders Him powerless. No deep, personal concern that is beyond His touch. Every issue of every area of your life is under Him. There is nothing that you should do in opposition to His instruction, and nothing that you should hold back in doubt of His rich and abiding care. I know we generally exaggerate when we say all and everything, but in the case of you and Jesus, all means all.

As we seek Him today, let Jesus be above all in your life.
