Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Exodus 2:21, ” Then Moses was content to live with the man, and he gave Zipporah his daughter to Moses. “
Background & Application
I feel like we tend to view revival as something that only a person or church needs if they have been going through the motions spiritually or not feeling very close to God in their daily walk. And that can be very much the case. Think about Moses living in Midian for those forty years. As he was going about his life, living and working and raising a family, God met him in a burning bush to call him to rescue Israel. But Moses asked God, ” Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt? ” He surely was humble before God, but I also think he was wondering, ” I’ve been indifferent to God all these years. What’s so special about now? ” Moses needed revival. Now what about someone who has turned their back on God or feels like they have failed Him? Consider Peter denying Jesus three times. He walked as close to Christ as anyone could, so he must have felt broken and ashamed over his betrayal. But Jesus comes to him and tells him to feed His sheep. Peter needed revival. And what about the one suffering sorrow and disappointment?
Jesus’ followers were distraught after His death, but He specifically met two of them on the road to Emmaus and explained the scriptures to them, so much so that their hearts burned within them and they went and declared ” The Lord is risen! ” These unhappy followers needed revival. And then there are those who are spending time with the Lord in worship. Look at Peter, James, and John on the mount with Jesus. He was transfigured before them, and they wanted to stop and build a tabernacle and have church right there. But God interrupted them and commanded them, ” Hear Him! ” This one-time encounter wasn’t supposed to define their life or Jesus’ ministry. Their revival got their focus where it needed to be. Listening to Jesus has that effect. It brings revival to you, no matter where you are.
Charge
As we seek Him today, ask God to bring a revival to your spirit. Ask Him to make you even closer to Him than you are. And if you’re a ways from Him, make today the day that you return to Him.
