Let God Lighten Your Life

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from John 11:53, ” Then from that day on, they plotted to put Him to death. “

Background

In 1916, Germany became the first country to institute Daylight Saving Time. The reasoning was to save fuel by minimizing the use of artificial lighting as the country encountered World War I. In 1918, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law what was then called ” Fast Time, ” which was also intended to support our war efforts. Since then, the institution and utilization of Daylight Saving Time has ebbed and flowed. There was a period during the 1970’s where DST lasted for ten months. In 2006, the period was extended to the current schedule of eight months, after having been seven for almost 20 years. Presently, the time change is justified for various reasons, but there is little verifiable evidence that significant energy costs are being saved by the moving ahead of our clocks one hour. Eight days ago, Daylight Saving Time began for 2017. Today, interestingly, is the first day of spring. And though winter can be lovely and is certainly beloved by many, I find it amusing that the occurrence of the time change could not wait even for winter to end. The administration of our time zones even seems to long for springtime as the final days of winter hang on. I wouldn’t say that society gets fed up with winter, but after 90 days, we all are probably longing for a change.

Application

The change that some wanted as Jesus walked this Earth was for His time to end as well. Oddly, they made up their minds to put Him to death after He had just evidenced His complete authority over death itself. I guess they figured a dead man couldn’t raise himself. If you’re in the mood for a change, then you have come to the right season. And if you’re coming to Jesus, then you’ve come to the right person as well. When you’ve had it up to here, and the last 90 days seem like a lifetime, know that you’re just what Jesus wants. Your spiritural winter may feel like it’s never going to end, but newness and restoration are yours in Christ.

Charge

As we seek Him today, let the Father of Lights shine into your heart and turn your hour of darkness into a season of light.
