Pray for Those Suffering

Pray for those around you who are suffering at the hands of Satan.

Our verse for today comes from Mark 14:31, ” But he spoke more vehemently, ‘If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!’ And they all said likewise. “

San Bernardino, California is the 100th largest city in the country, with a population of just over 200,000 people. In 2012, it became the largest city to file for bankruptcy, until Detroit claimed that dubious honor the following year. Seventy five years ago, McDonald’s was founded in this southwestern California town. The fast food giant, known for its McThis and McThat items, originally began as a barbecue restaurant. In 1923, Glen Bell, the founder of Taco Bell, was born in San Bernardino. Gene Hackman, the star of such classics as The French Connection and Hoosiers , also is from San Bernardino. Some time ago, the city named after an Italian priest, is in the news for all the wrong reasons. Fourteen people were killed and at least seventeen were wounded in a meeting room inside a social service center, apparently the work of a man and woman who fled and were eventually gunned down in a battle with police. This news, while news to us all, is unfortunately not new. It was only three weeks prior that six people were shot in Texas while camping. On October 1, nine were shot dead at a community college in Oregon. In July, five servicemen were shot at a military training center in Tennessee. At a church in Charleston this summer, nine were killed during a prayer meeting. And the list goes on and on, each as horrible as the next for the victims and those who knew and loved them.

And I’m afraid that the shootings are not going to stop anytime soon. Certainly guns are a part of the issue, but people and guns are doing most of the destruction. And while you might be able to control the guns, you cannot control the people. Sick minds and sinful, hateful hearts need supernatural intervention that only God can provide. Your town and mine may not have made the news in the way San Bernardino or Charleston have, but people are dying here and there nonetheless. If your faith rests in the One who conquered death, what difference are you making with your life?

As we seek Him today, pray for those in San Bernardino and elsewhere who have suffered at the hands of gunmen. And pray for those around you who are suffering at the hands of Satan.
