However, much has changed over the last few years as the Dobbs decision (here) has allowed the States to more accurately conform to the views of their populations (see below).

Following are current statistics that paint a picture of the continuing significance of Abortions in America. The numbers speak for themselves.

What is Killing Americans

Below is the most recent data from the National Center for Health Statistics from 2021 (details here) and Statista (details here).

  • Heart disease – 696k
  • —- Abortion – 626k —-
  • Cancer – 605k
  • COVID – 417k
  • Accidents – 225k
  • Stroke – 163k
  • Chronic respiratory -142k
  • Alzheimer’s – 119k
  • Diabetes – 103k

To put abortions in context, death from this procedure represents the second highest cause of mortality in the country, totaling 12,039 unborn babies killed every week.

Another Trip to the Abortion Clinic

Almost a year to the day, I had my first experience prayerfully protesting at an Abortion Clinic. Today was my third. There were about 70 of us who took part of a Saturday to stand across the street from the “clinic” where typically pills are given to expectant moms that will, over time, kill their unborn babies (here). The article I wrote about the first trip (here) presents a more detailed picture of the experience. As before, today we sang praise songs and prayed for about half an hour, watching car after car pulling in. No yelling, no challenging those across the street. We watched as abortion volunteers, dressed in rainbow-colored jackets quickly ushered cars into the back parking lot so moms could escape into the building, out of site. Since 93% of abortions take place in the first trimester, the law change in North Carolina, restricting abortion to the first 12 weeks, has not had a material impact on the process.

It seems from interviews of those considering abortion that 80% of women are pressured to abort, often by the dads.

So, when pro-choice advocates use the phrase “my body, my choice”, it disguises the fact that other “interested parties” also participate heavily in the decision.

We prayed for the dads, the families, the legislators, and those “doctors”, staff, and volunteers who are supporting the second-highest disease (sin) that is killing Americans. Further, we prayed for the church to be the catalyst for continued change. That pastors would have the courage to stand up and preach the Biblical truth about abortion.

What are the Laws, State-by-State

Once Roe v. Wade was determined by the Supreme Court to be unconstitutional (Dobbs), abortion became a state-by-state matter. The following is a summary of current laws, by state, on abortion (see details).

  • Abortion is banned after conception in Alabama, American Samoa, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Mariana Islands, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin (in flux).
  • Abortion is banned after conception except for rape or incest in Idaho, North Dakota, West Virginia (during the first 8 or 16 weeks depending on the age of the victim), Georgia, South Carolina, and Nebraska.
  • Abortion is banned after x weeks from conception – North Carolina (12), Guam (13), Arizona (15), Florida (15), Utah (18), Kansas (22), Iowa (22 in flux), Massachusetts (24), Nevada (24), New Hampshire (24), Pennsylvania (24) and Virginia (27).
  • Abortion is legal until “fetal viability” (between 23 and 24 weeks) in – California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Road Island, the US Virgin Islands, Washington, Montana (in flux), and Wyoming (in flux).
  • Abortion is legal with no limits – Alaska, Colorado, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Vermont, and Washington DC.

Today’s Christian Views on Abortion

A study, published in June 2023 by PRRI (Public Religion Research Institute), offered insights into the current views of American Christians. The following statement was asked of 2038 Christian adults with these results indicating those who agree:

“Abortion should be legal in most or all cases.”

  • Political affiliation – 86% of Democrats, 38% of Republicans, and 64% overall.
  • Ethnic – 72% Black Protestants, 55% Hispanic Protestants, 45% Hispanic Catholics
  • Non-Christian – 87% Religiously unaffiliated, 74% Other Religions

The Family Research Council for Biblical Worldview released a study on American Churchgoers in August of 2023 (details here). Interviewing over 1000 American adults, the results include:

  • 1 in 6 regular church attendees has had or encouraged an abortion.
  • 1 in 5 regular church attendees do not believe the Bible identifies when life begins.
  • Of those who did believe the Bible identifies when life begins (65% of respondents), 52% felt that it begins when a female egg is fertilized, 7% when the baby reaches viability, and 6% six weeks into the pregnancy.
  • On the subject of what Churchgoing Christians believe the Bible teaches:
    • 35% said the Bible teaches that abortion is not acceptable under any circumstances, while 19% believe it is only acceptable when the life of the mother is threatened and10% feel the Bible teaches that the decisions on abortion are up to the couple,7% believe abortion is allowed if there are physical or mental disabilities while
    • 6% think the Bible allows abortions under all circumstances.

What Does the Bible Say

  • Jeremiah 1:5 – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
  • Psalm 139:13 – For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
  • Exodus 21:22-25 – “When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman so that her children come out… if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.
