Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Philippians 1:23-24, ” For I am hard-pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. “
Background
In the movie When Harry Met Sally , the two main characters first meet when they share a ride from Chicago to New York after graduating college. After several interesting conversations that reveal the unique qualities of their respective personalities, they arrive in New York with no intentions of ever seeing each other again. And other than sitting next to each other on a plane ride several years later, they do not. Until many years later. On that occasion, they both happen to be in a bookstore when Harry comes over and starts a conversation with the reluctant Sally, who had been completely turned off twice before by the attitudes and arrogance of Harry regarding life and women. But now, it turns out that he’s getting a divorce. He had fallen in love, but she was now breaking his heart. Through this encounter, and several more that follow, Harry and Sally actually begin to develop a friendship, a relation that Harry had previously said was impossible between men and women. As they grow closer, their relationship blossoms, until one night when Sally is distraught that her ex-boyfriend is getting married. As Harry consoles and reassures her, things progress until he spends the night with her. But his unwillingness to take the next step in their relationship leads to things turning sour between them. Weeks pass and Sally will not speak to him, as she refuses to be his ” consolation prize. “
Application
But then on New Year’s Eve, Harry realizes his love for Sally, and he sprints through town in hopes of sharing this revelation with her at the party she is attending. When he finds her, he explains his sudden urgency to be with her by saying, ” When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible. ” The rest of our lives as Christians has already started, many years ago for some. What is left is for us to live out the purpose that keeps us here in the flesh. In God’s design, it is necessary that you are where you are. There is someone whose account is intended to be impacted by you.
Charge
As we seek Him today, live today as if today was an intentional gift from God. Be the necessary ingredient in someone else’s life towards God.
