Step Out Bravely

Do not be content to continue being typecast as you always have. Take part in a new script from God.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Mark 6:3, ” ‘Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?’ So they were offended at Him. “

Background

In 1976, much of America witnessed one of the great battles of all time, a war that lasted a mere 45 minutes. I of course am referring to the classic boxing match between the World Heavyweight Champion Apollo Creed and the unknown southpaw from Philadelphia, Rocky Balboa. This fight, unlike the epic ones of its day between Ali and Frazier, was a fictional encounter that starred Sylvester Stallone as the nominally-skilled boxer who was randomly chosen to be a showcased punching bag for the champ. However, Rocky is dogged in his refusal to succumb to the beatings he receives from Creed, and eventually lasts the entire 15 rounds, barely losing to the self-proclaimed ” Master of Disaster. ” The movie turned out to be wildly successful for Stallone, and he went on to make several sequels. Additionally, Stallone had a successful run as John Rambo, a Vietnam War veteran who struggles to exist in post-war America. Just as he did in the Rocky series, Stallone’s portrayal of Rambo centered mostly on the physicality of the character rather than Stallone’s skill as an actor. But in 1984, Stallone made the decision to star in Rhinestone , where he plays an obnoxious New York cab driver who is the two-week project of Dolly Parton’s character to be transformed from a talent-free cabbie into a country music star. Never has there been a fish more clearly out of water than this one. Stallone could fight, whether in a ring or the jungle, but singing country music was not his thing.

Application

Jesus was known as a carpenter. He was also a Son and a brother. But a prophet? That was offensive, and the people would have nothing of it. You are something, perhaps several things. You are known for those things and by those things. But what are you not known for that you should be? Stepping out on faith could lead you to a Rhinestone , but it also could put you directly in the center of God’s ring. Will you take that chance and step out on faith?

Charge

As we seek Him today, do not be content to continue being typecast as you always have. Take part in a new script from God.
