Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Psalm 93:5, “Your decrees are very trustworthy; holiness befits your house, O LORD, forevermore.”
Background
If there’s anything that I could be less qualified to write about, holiness might be at the top of the list. I’m experienced with repentance, I’ve tasted God’s grace, I even consider myself honest. But holiness goes hand in hand with humility – the second you think you’ve arrived, you immediately disqualify yourself. And today’s verse makes it pretty clear as to why. Holiness befits His house. imagine for a moment being in God’s house. What behaviors, what thoughts and words, what motives would befit standing in the home of the Holy God? Could some of last week’s actions come with you through His doors?
Application
How about the way you spoke to your spouse on occasion? Could we hand God a list of our recent thoughts and have Him read them to His other guests? I dare say that standing in that foyer would feel extremely uncomfortable. And perhaps that’s not a bad thing. Thinking about that moment, that chasm that separates us from His holiness, Should move us to pursue that holiness. God Himself, in the form of a Holy Spirit, resides in us. He knows everything there is to know about holiness. If we will submit each breath to His Spirit, then holiness will befit us, too.
Charge
As we go today, ask God to show us what real holiness is, so that everything else we have will stand out for what it really is. Thank Him that He is holy and that no matter how much we sin, His holiness will never change.
