The Whole Counsel of Scripture

Our verse for today comes from John 14:2, ” In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? “

There are many ways to say the same thing. Some of them are less clear than others. And depending on how your brain is wired, some can be downright perplexing. This past weekend I had the thrilling experience of reading over a legal document regarding the transfer of some real estate. Frankly, after reading ” heretowith ” for the tenth time, you’re willing to sign anything just to make that piece of paper go away. But at least as confusing as legalese is the jargon of logic, for in that world it’s not the case that double negatives and relative statements do not exist. For some of you, the previous sentence made perfect sense. You’re completely comfortable with expressions that begin, ” It’s not the case that, ” or ” If not this, then, ” and other such mumbo jumbo. For others of us, it’s makes our brains hurt. In His own way, Jesus said many things about what was not, or what was true about something not being true. He just didn’t scramble it up like an attorney.

Jesus said it’s not the broad way or the wide road that leads to life. He said it’s not the case that He came to bring peace, but a sword, dividing even families over the truth of the gospel. He said that He did not come to condemn, but that those who do not believe are condemned already in their sin. He said that His words were not His own, but those of His Father. And He made it perfectly clear that calling Him ” Lord, Lord ” is not the way to eternal life, but doing His will as expressed through His Word. Such is the case where the first shall be last and the last shall be first. God’s standards of measure and principles of value do not coincide with those of man. Satan, through his worldly system, would have us see and elevate things that appear important and relevant, all the while obscuring the truth. We must commit ourselves to not be swayed, for it’s not the case that His Truth has changed. Every word is still profitable for training in righteousness.

As we seek Him today, let the whole counsel of holy scripture keep you rooted and grounded in Christ.
