Scripture
Our verse for today comes from John 10:1, ” Most assuredly I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. “
Background
Let me first admit that what I am about to share is filled with incomplete details and apparent contradictions, for what I am retelling harkens back some 35 years ago to my days of high school. Now, of all the images that I think I recall, the one that I am certain of has me climbing through my bedroom window late at night to get back in the house. After that, it gets a little fuzzy. But as best as I can remember, it goes something like this. I did not have my own car, so when I hung out with my buddies, one of them would usually drive. Not having a curfew, we would invariably end up at one of their houses talking until we couldn’t stay awake, at which point they would take me home. Since I had no car, I had no keys, and since my dad locked up the house and cars, I had no way to get inside. Except by my window. We lived in a ranch-style house, and my bedroom window was quite accessible. And as I remember, the lock was broken and I could push up the window and climb in. Except, sometimes I think I recall tapping on the window to wake up my brother to let me in. And other times, perhaps when I drove and had my dad’s keys, I remember letting myself in through the front door. So as you can see, I’m not altogether certain what circumstances led to my unconventional return to my room. I only know that sometimes the window was the only way I was getting in.
Application
In all the years that we lived in that house, neither thief nor robber tried their hand at my window. Whether that thought or concern ever crossed my mind, I do not recall. I only know that I was never fearful of an intruder. And as sketchy as all that sounds, it is light years from the security and assurance that we have as sheep of the Good Shepherd. No pretender can snatch us away, no thief can swipe us unawares. It’s a truth we don’t worry over very often, for the simple fact that God is so great and so good. And when you are in His hand, it’s as good as it gets.
Charge
As we seek Him today, let your security in Christ take you where you might not go on your own.
