When The Time Comes

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from John 16:2, “They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he is offering service to God.”

Background

There was a time when the time was coming that white men would capture, enslave, buy and sell human beings who had dark skin. Soon after, the time was coming that other white men would stand up and declare that no one should own another human, regardless of his skin tone. There was a time when the time was coming that men would walk around on the moon. There was a time when the time was coming that machines would take the place of people. There was a time when the time was coming that a man would run a mile in less than four minutes. There was a time when the time was coming that it would be acceptable and legal for a man to marry another man. There was a time when the time was coming where a person would get in more trouble for mistreating an animal than for killing an unborn child. So many of those times that so many thought they could not imagine, much less would actually see, have taken place in our lifetimes. Even hundreds of years after the dark ages and the Crusades, groups of people are killing groups of other people because they think they are doing a service for God.

Application

In light of the depths to which our society has fallen, followers of Jesus, who Himself was most violated beyond any other who has ever lived, must look upon their own hearts and ask themselves why they do what they do. And nothing is to be excluded. The infinite God has an interest in every detail of your life, and He greatly desires that your every action is driven by His every motivation. You may have thought that you were doing it for the right reasons. You may have believed that it was important. You may have expected it from others or required that things remain a certain way. But somewhere in time, an insignificant small step was taken that ended with killing God’s own image in the name of God. Your path is surely not so dire, but it is just as serious.

The time is coming when the time has come. And then, what will He find you have done with your time?

Charge

As we seek Him today, let God examine your heart in a way He may never have examined it before. The time has come for you to spend that kind of time with Him.
